Nestled between the jungled foothills of the Sierra Madre del Sur mountains and the warm tropical waters of the Pacific Ocean lies the small beachfront community of Troncones, part of the Municipio of La Unión Montes de Oca in the State of Guerrero.
Home to about 700 permanent residents of mainly fishermen, farmers, and ranchers, Troncones has also become one of Mexico's favorite beachfront eco-resorts. But don't look for high-rise hotels, shopping centers or discoteques here.
The area of Troncones from south of the village north to the neighboring village of Majahua is dotted with small guest inns, vacation homes, bungalows, and Bed & Breakfasts interspersed with various seafood restaurants and low-key beach clubs.
You'll find miles of white sand beach, from the small coves to the south of Playa Troncones to Playa Troncones itself and north to Playa Manzanillo and Playa Majahua. Swimming is possible at Playa Troncones, but because the coast fronts the open ocean, attention must be paid to the waves and currents that can be dangerous, especially during the hurricane season. Playa Manzanillo and Playa Majahua are two of the preferred swimming beaches. Numerous tidal pools also offer a chance to refresh yourself and cool off.
The coastline of the Troncones area is a world famous surfing destination. La Saladita, Playa Majahua and Playa Manzanillo are some of the popular local surf spots. There are more nearby. Just ask around.
Other local activities include boogie boarding, kayaking, hiking, cave exploring, horseback riding, snorkeling, diving, sport fishing, birdwatching, and mountain biking.
You can often see dolphins jumping and playing in the waves, and during late fall and winter migrating whales pass by along the coast. Here is where their females give birth and teach their young to swim. You can take a charter to see them up close yet at a safe distance.
Sea turtles also frequent our beaches year round to lay their eggs, which are often placed in protected areas to incubate until they hatch. The hatchlings are released around sunset to give them a better chance of survival. Ask your lodging provider where to see them hatch.
Troncones can be reached by taxi and bus. The bus will drop you off at the entrance road a few kilometers from the village. Troncones has its own taxi service for getting up and down the coast as well as back to "civilization". Surfboards, boogy-boards, bicycles, and other accessories can be rented.
Troncones has telephone, internet, satellite TV, and cellphone service, though they can be somewhat spotty at times, especially during rainy season. Most lodgings offer these services.
Bottled drinking water and purified ice are provided by lodgings and restaurants. Convenience stores, a pharmacy and other small businesses in the village and along the coastal road satisfy most basic needs.
There is a small medical clinic in Troncones as well as reliable and competent doctors, clinics and hospitals twenty-five minutes away in Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo.
